Appenzell Ausserrhoden (AR)
The Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden is located in the north-eastern part of Switzerland. The seat of the government and parliament as well as the police are in Herisau, while the judicial authorities are in Trogen. Herisau is also the largest city in the canton. The canton covers a surface of 243 km² and has a population of 53,660 (status: December 2012; wikipedia.org).

The Governing Council and the Cantonal Council are based in Herisau. Although the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden does not have an official capital according to the cantonal constitution, this status is shared by Herisau and Trogen (wikipedia.org).
